What is FOM, the number that should set the price?

FOM (figure of merit) is resolution in lp/mm multiplied by SNR, and it is the single best one-number summary of what a tube can do. A tube resolving 64 lp/mm at SNR 22 measures FOM 1408. Because it compresses two independent qualities into one figure, FOM is how tubes are graded, sorted and priced across the entire industry, and it is why two identical-looking PVS-14s can differ by $700: the tubes inside measure differently.

Why it matters when buying: FOM is honest only when it is bounded on both ends. What are lp/mm and SNR, the two numbers inside FOM?

Resolution and signal cleanliness are the two ingredients FOM multiplies together, and they answer different questions about the image.

lp/mm (line pairs per millimeter)

Resolution measures how much fine detail the tube can separate: a "line pair" is one black and one white line, and lp/mm counts how many such pairs fit in a millimeter of the image before they blur together. Higher lp/mm means crisper branches, fence lines and facial outlines at distance. Our line spec is 64 lp/mm, with individual sheets often measuring slightly higher. SNR (signal-to-noise ratio)

SNR measures how clean the image stays as light falls: it is the ratio of real scene signal to the random sparkle (scintillation) the tube generates on its own. This is the spec that actually separates tiers in the dark. Two tubes at the same resolution look identical at dusk; at 2 a.m. under overcast, the higher-SNR tube shows a calm, watchable scene while the lower one dances with noise. What do gain, autogating and EBI control?

These three govern how the tube behaves at the extremes: too little light, too much light, and the floor in between.

Gain

Gain is how strongly the tube amplifies incoming light, and manual gain means you set it. Turning gain down on a bright moonlit night reduces noise and eye fatigue; turning it up under deep canopy pulls out shadow detail at the cost of some sparkle. Autogating

Autogating protects the tube and your view when bright light hits: the power supply switches the photocathode on and off thousands of times per second, throttling exposure so headlights, porch lights or a teammate's flashlight neither bloom out the scene nor burn the tube. EBI (equivalent background illumination)

EBI is the faint glow a tube produces with no light entering at all, its noise floor. Lower is better: high EBI washes out the darkest scenes with a grey haze the way a dirty windshield washes out headlights. What are the photocathode, phosphor and cathode diameter?

These are the tube's hardware identity: what it is made of, what color it draws in, and how big its input window is.

Photocathode

The photocathode is the front layer that converts incoming photons into electrons, and its chemistry defines the tube's generation: multi-alkali for Gen 2 and Gen 2+, gallium arsenide for Gen 3. Better chemistry means more electrons per photon, which is sensitivity. Phosphor (P45 white)

The phosphor is the output screen where electrons become visible light, and its designation sets the image color: P43 renders green, P45 renders black and white. Cathode diameter

Cathode diameter is the active input area of the tube; ours measure 17.5mm. What do rated hours and blemishes tell you?

They tell you how long the tube will serve and what cosmetic state it arrived in. Blemishes are dark spots in the image from microscopic debris or defects, graded by zone and size on the QC sheet. Run the check: 65 x 20.33 lands the tube inside its advertised 1250-1350 band, resolution beats the 64 lp/mm line spec, and the blemish grid is clean.
