Complete Quad Nods Compared (2026): GPNVG-18 Alternatives With Tubes Included

Quick answer: a fair GPNVG-18 alternative is another complete four tube quad, not a housing, a digital unit or a dummy. Complete quads we found listed on 22 October 2026 ran from $12,700 for an Argus APNVG to $51,570 for the military L3Harris GPNVG-18, with several sold out or backordered. Our GPNVG-18 quad, complete with 4 tubes, from $10,999.95 ships complete with 4 Gen 2+ white phosphor tubes and a 104 degree view (plus or minus 2). Below, each quad is compared by layout, tubes, field of view and listed price, with the seller and date for every figure.

Most "GPNVG-18 alternative" results compare things that should not be compared: a complete goggle against an empty housing, or a tube goggle against a camera with screens. This post only puts complete quads with four image intensifier tubes side by side. We name the seller and the date for every figure, because quad prices and stock change often, and we only list specs that the seller publishes.

What counts as a complete GPNVG-18 alternative?

To be in this comparison, a quad has to:

  • Have four image intensifier tubes installed, not "tubes sold separately"
  • Be sold as a working goggle, ready to mount
  • Have a published price from a seller we could read on the date shown

That rules out housing only kits (see housing only quad kits explained), digital quads that use cameras and screens (see digital quad vs tube quad) and dummies for airsoft and display.

What is the difference between a fixed and an articulating quad?

A fixed GPNVG-18 layout holds the four tubes in two pods on one bridge. The pods move for eye spacing, but the outer tubes always sit at the same angle to the inner ones. It is the layout of the military original and of ours.

An articulating quad lets each side fold or swing, so you can run it as a quad, fold the outer tubes away, or flip one side up. That flexibility adds parts and usually cost. Some users like it; some prefer the simplicity of a fixed housing. Our post on articulating pods covers how articulation works on dual tubes, and the same ideas apply.

How does the Night Operators GPNVG-18 compare on tubes?

Ours uses four Gen 2+ white phosphor tubes, autogated, in FOM tiers from 1400-1550 upward. The military original uses Gen 3 tubes, which cost more. The Argus APNVG listings we read describe Gen 2 white phosphor. The other quads list several tube options, which changes their price a lot.

Tube generation is not the only thing that sets picture quality: FOM, the grade of each tube, matters a lot within a generation. If you are weighing Gen 2+ against Gen 3, read Gen 2 vs Gen 3 night vision and FOM and SNR across generations.

How does it compare on field of view?

Each figure here is the total panoramic view across all four tubes, as the seller or maker publishes it. Ours is 104 degrees, plus or minus 2. The military GPNVG-18 is listed at 97 degrees. The Argus APNVG is listed at 100 degrees and the QTNVG at 120 degrees.

A wider number is not the whole story. How the four pictures join, how much the inner tubes overlap for depth, and how clean the edges look all matter. Our post on GPNVG-18 field of view explains what 104 degrees looks like in a field.

What you actually see through it

Numbers on a listing are hard to picture. Here is the same hallway at night through a standard tube, a PRO tube and our GPNVG-18.

GPNVG-18 field of view comparison, illustration: the same hallway through a 50 degree PRO night vision tube
Illustration, not real footage. 50 degree PRO tube (PVS-14 PRO, PVS-31 PRO): a wider circle, but both side doorways are still outside it.

These pictures show field of view only. The blue tint is not the tube colour: our tubes are white phosphor and show the night in black and white.

How does it compare on price?

Here are the entry figures from the table:

  • Night Operators GPNVG-18: from $10,999.95 (our Founders Launch Price)
  • Argus APNVG: from $12,700 at Quad Defense, from $13,495 at Wills Optics
  • QTNVG: $13,500 at Kommando Store
  • Nocturn Chimera: from $15,949 at Quad Defense (sold out)
  • Steele Nighthawk-Pano: from $19,999.98 (last seen 16 October 2026)
  • L3Harris GPNVG-18: $47,999 at Quad Defense, $51,570 at Atomic Defense

That comparison only covers the quads in this table on 22 October 2026. Each seller's tube options change the figure, so compare at the tube grade you want, not at the headline.

What about availability?

On the day we read these pages, several rivals could not be bought straight away: the Argus APNVG at Atomic Defense was backordered, every tube option of the QTNVG at Kommando Store was sold out, and the Chimera was sold out at Quad Defense. Ours is built to order: four tubes are fitted and the unit is tested after you order, and it ships about 5 to 7 weeks from your order date.

What comes in the box with ours?

  • The four tube goggle in a black moulded shell, Sand housing
  • A black helmet mount with a flip lever
  • An external battery pack for four AA batteries, with a coiled cable
  • A black hard case with cut foam, a lens cloth and a small bag
  • Dark tinted, see through front lens caps

Specs from our page: 1x magnification, 860 g or less without batteries and lens caps, run time about 45 hours (maker figure), dovetail shoe for standard dovetail helmet mounts. For what to check on any of these quads, use our quad nods buying guide.

Where do digital quads and housings fit?

They sit outside this table on purpose. A digital quad such as the Goodnite Gear GNG G18 listed at $8,950 on 22 October 2026, and the Vie Tactical digital quad at $1,399 the same day. Both use camera sensors and screens. A housing only kit, such as the Nocturn Chimera housing at Quad Defense for $9,000 (sold out) on 22 October 2026, has no tubes at all. Each is a fair product for the right buyer, but putting either one next to a complete tube quad makes the complete quad look marked up when it is not. If a seller's page shows a "GPNVG-18 alternative" at a price far below the quads in the table, read the page for the tube line before anything else.

What should you ask any quad seller before you buy?

Whichever complete quad you shortlist, these questions settle most of what a listing leaves out:

  1. Are all four tubes installed, and are they tested in this housing? Ask for it in writing.
  2. What generation and FOM are the tubes? All four, not "up to".
  3. What phosphor colour, in all four tubes? A quad should carry one colour across the view.
  4. What is the total field of view, and is there a tolerance? Ours is 104 degrees, plus or minus 2.
  5. What comes in the box? Helmet mount, battery pack, cable and case are not always included.
  6. When does it ship? In stock, backordered or built to order, and how long.
  7. Who do you talk to after you buy? A named seller with an email address you can reach.

Our answers are on our product page. For a wider checklist, see the quad nods buying guide.

Does buying direct change the price?

It can. Most quads in the table reach you through a dealer, and each layer between the factory and you adds its share. We sell our quad direct, the same way we sell our PVS-14 and our PVS-31 PRO dual tube, which starts at $3,799.95. Buying direct also means the people who answer your questions are the people who sold you the goggle. For how the GPNVG-18 price is built up tier by tier, see the GPNVG-18 price guide.

Which complete quad should you choose?

  • You want the original and price is no object: the L3Harris GPNVG-18, from a US dealer.
  • You want to fold the outer tubes away: look at the articulating quads.
  • You want four white phosphor tubes in the fixed GPNVG-18 layout, complete, sold direct, from $10,999.95: ours.
