Housing Only Quad Kits Explained: What You Get, What You Still Need, the Real Total

Quick answer: a housing only quad kit is an empty GPNVG-18 style goggle with no image intensifier tubes inside. It cannot show you anything at night until you buy four tubes and have them fitted and aligned. Housings listed at $7,500 and $9,000 at a US dealer when we checked on 22 October 2026, before a single tube. A complete quad already has its four tubes: our GPNVG-18 quad, complete with 4 tubes, from $10,999.95 ships complete with 4 Gen 2+ white phosphor tubes, installed and tested.

Housing only quads are the most confusing listings in night vision. They look exactly like a quad in the photos. They often carry "GPNVG-18" in the title. And the price is a fraction of a complete goggle, which makes every complete quad look marked up. They are not a scam by themselves: housings are real products for real builders. But if you buy one thinking you bought night vision, you have bought the start of a project. This guide explains what is in the box, what is not, and what the total really looks like.

What is a housing only quad kit?

It is the body of a four tube panoramic goggle without its tubes. A typical housing kit includes:

  • Two pods, each built to hold two tubes
  • The bridge that joins the pods, often with an IPD adjustment
  • Objective lenses at the front and eyepieces at the back
  • A mount shoe for a helmet mount
  • Sometimes a battery box, cable and power wiring

What it does not include is the part that makes night vision work: the image intensifier tubes. In a dual tube binocular, two tubes make up most of the price. In a quad there are four.

How do you spot a housing only listing?

Read the title and the small print for any of these words: "housing", "kit", "body only", "shell", "no tubes", "tubes not included", "for tube install" or "builder". Then check what the page does not say. A complete quad will tell you about its tubes, because the tubes are what you pay for. A housing listing will not list:

  • Tube generation (Gen 2+, Gen 3)
  • FOM, or any tube grade
  • Phosphor colour (green or white)
  • Autogating

If those lines are missing, assume no tubes until the seller confirms in writing. Our quad nods buying guide has a table for telling complete, housing, digital and dummy quads apart.

What do housing only kits cost?

Two listings we read on 22 October 2026 show the spread:

Housing only quad listings, read 22 October 2026
Housing Seller Listed price Tubes
Argus APNVG housing kit Quad Defense $7,500 None
Nocturn Chimera housing Quad Defense $9,000 (sold out) None
For comparison: Night Operators GPNVG-18, complete Our product page from $10,999.95 Four Gen 2+ white phosphor, installed

Look at the second row. A premium empty housing listed within $2,000 of our complete quad with its four tubes fitted and tested. That is the trap: the housing price looks like a quad price, but it is only the start.

What do you still need to buy with a housing?

To turn a housing into working quad nods, you need:

  1. Four image intensifier tubes, of a size and type the housing accepts.
  2. Tubes that suit each other. All four should share a phosphor colour, and should be close in grade, or the four pictures will not look like one. Our post on tube matching explains why this matters even with two tubes.
  3. Fitting and alignment. Each tube has to be installed and each channel lined up so the four pictures join cleanly. See what collimation is.
  4. Power. A battery box and cable, if the housing does not include them.
  5. A helmet mount that fits the housing's shoe.

What is the real total for a housing build?

The real total is the housing, plus four tubes, plus the fitting work, plus any power and mount parts not in the box. We will not put a number on loose tubes or fitting here: tube prices move with generation, grade and seller, and labour depends on who does it. What we can say is how to get your number before you spend anything:

  1. Ask the housing seller exactly which tubes the housing accepts.
  2. Get a written quote for four tubes of the same phosphor colour and close grade.
  3. Get a written quote for fitting and aligning all four channels, and what happens if a channel will not line up.
  4. Add the housing, the tubes, the fitting, power, mount and shipping both ways.
  5. Put that total next to the price of a complete quad at the same tube grade.

Then compare. At the 1400-1550 FOM tier, our complete quad is $10,999.95 with all of that already done.

What can go wrong with a housing build?

  • Tubes that do not fit. Tube size and type vary. A housing built for one kind will not take another.
  • Four pictures that do not join. If a channel is out of line, you see a doubled or broken edge between tubes, which is tiring to look through.
  • Mismatched tubes. One tube brighter, one tinted differently, one noisier. In a quad, your eye catches the difference across the joined view.
  • No one to call. When the housing came from one seller, the tubes from another and the fitting from a third, a fault has three owners.
  • Time. Sourcing four tubes and booking bench time can take longer than a built to order complete unit.

What should you ask a housing seller before you pay?

If you still want a housing, these questions protect you. Ask them in writing and keep the answers:

  1. Is this housing only, with no tubes? Get a plain yes.
  2. Which tubes does it accept? Size, mounting type and any power needs.
  3. Is power included? Battery box, cable and wiring, or not.
  4. Is a helmet mount included, and what shoe does the housing use?
  5. Who has fitted tubes into this housing before, and can they do yours?
  6. What happens if a channel will not line up once tubes are in?
  7. Can you return the housing if it turns out the tubes you can get will not fit?

If the seller cannot answer the second and fifth questions clearly, the build will be harder than the listing suggests.

How does a complete quad compare with a housing build overall?

In total cost and time the two can end up closer than the headline prices suggest, and the risk sits in a different place. With a complete quad, one seller fitted the tubes, tested the unit and answers for it. With a housing build, you carry the risk of every step: the tubes, the fit, the alignment and the shipping between them. The fair comparison is your full housing build total from the steps above against a complete quad at the same tube grade, not the housing price against the complete price.

For complete quads side by side, with sellers and dates, read complete quad nods compared. For what a complete quad costs tier by tier, see the GPNVG-18 price guide.

Who should buy a housing only quad?

Housings are the right buy for some people:

  • You already own four suitable tubes, perhaps from older goggles.
  • You have access to a skilled bench and the tools to align four channels.
  • You want to choose each tube yourself and accept the time and risk.

If none of those is you, a housing is a project, not a goggle.

What you actually see through it

A housing on its own shows you nothing. Once four matched tubes are in it, this is the view you are paying for, next to a standard tube and a PRO tube.

These pictures show field of view only. The blue tint is not the tube colour: our tubes are white phosphor and show the night in black and white.

What does a complete quad include instead?

A complete quad has the tubes in it, fitted and tested, and arrives ready to mount. Our GPNVG-18 ships with:

Housing only vs our complete GPNVG-18
Typical housing only kit Night Operators GPNVG-18
Image intensifier tubes None Four Gen 2+ white phosphor, autogated
Fitting and alignment Your job, or a paid bench Done and tested at the factory
Field of view Depends on the tubes you add 104 degrees (plus or minus 2)
Helmet mount Varies Black helmet mount with a flip lever, in the box
Power Varies External battery pack, four AA, coiled cable
Case Varies Black hard case with cut foam
Sees in the dark on arrival No Yes

Ours is built to order: your four tubes are fitted and the unit is tested after you order, and it ships about 5 to 7 weeks from your order date.

Why do housing listings rank above complete quads?

Because they use the same words. "GPNVG-18", "quad nods" and "panoramic" are in the titles of housings, digital units and dummies as well as complete goggles. A search engine has no way to know which ones have tubes unless the page says so. That is why every Night Operators quad page and post says it in plain words: complete with four tubes, not a housing only kit.

For the full price ladder from dummies to the military unit, read affordable GPNVG-18: what a complete four tube quad really costs. For complete quads side by side, see complete quad nods compared.

Our pick: unless you already own four tubes and a bench, skip the housing and buy complete. The GPNVG-18 quad, complete with 4 tubes, from $10,999.95 ships with four Gen 2+ white phosphor tubes installed and tested, a helmet mount, a battery pack and a hard case.

How much does a quad housing cost?

Listings we read at Quad Defense on 22 October 2026 were $7,500 for an Argus APNVG housing kit and $9,000 for a Nocturn Chimera housing (sold out), with no tubes.

What else do I need to make a housing work?

Four suitable image intensifier tubes of the same phosphor colour and close grade, fitting and alignment of all four channels, power, and a helmet mount that fits the shoe.

Is the Night Operators GPNVG-18 a housing only kit?

No. It ships complete with four Gen 2+ white phosphor tubes installed and tested at the factory, ready to mount and use.

Who should buy a housing only quad?

Someone who already owns four suitable tubes and has access to a skilled bench to fit and align them. For everyone else, a complete quad is the simpler buy.
